40 Year Legacy Underpins Future for Immunology

In December 2024, we commemorated World AIDS Day and 40 years of HIV/AIDS care, treatment, and research honouring a cornerstone legacy of the Sisters of Charity. The reception marked the 40th anniversary of Ward 17 South, Australia’s first dedicated AIDS ward.

Guest of Honour, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, delivered a moving address reflecting on lives lost, the leadership of the Sisters, the Hospital Board (then chaired by Charles Curran AC), and the dedicated staff. A/Prof Philip Cunningham OAM, Prof Andrew Carr, A/Prof Alisa Kane, and St Vincent’s HIV Ambassador and AIDS survivor Dr Steven Berveling, shared stories of commitment, innovation and compassion, with special tribute to the late Professors David Cooper AC and Ron Penny AO for their invaluable contributions.

The late Prof Ron Penny AO established the first Immunology Department at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney in 1969. Prof Penny was instrumental in anticipating the arrival of HIV/AIDS in Australia and positioning the hospital at the forefront of the country’s fight against the virus. The St Vincent’s Immunology Department continues to play a crucial role in addressing allergies, autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, and emerging community viral threats.

To honour Prof Penny’s legacy and the ongoing development of immunology research, the Foundation is establishing the Prof Ron Penny AO Program for Immunology, which will provide funding for a PhD research student in this field.
