Art Brings Joy to Sacred Heart – A Community Collaboration

The walls of Level 4 at Sacred Heart were once bare and quiet, but not anymore. Thanks to a beautiful collaboration between our teams and the creative minds at Darlinghurst Primary School, the space is now alive with colour, vibrancy and joy.

When Oncologist, Dr Michael Krasovisky and Director of Sacred Heart and Palliative Care, Davinia Seah noticed the ward’s walls were looking a little bland, they reached out to the community for help. Darlinghurst Public responded enthusiastically, forming an ‘Art Club’ dedicated to brightening our palliative care ward.

The students were asked to create pieces that expressed what brings them happiness. In artwork that truly radiates that spirit, the students’ pieces now adorn the ward and patient rooms, transforming the environment with warmth and comfort for patients and families.

To celebrate, the children joined us for afternoon tea, where we welcomed current patient Jennifer Dickerson, author and wife of celebrated Australian artist Robert Dickerson, with her son. They shared how art can breathe life not only into the artist but into everyone who experiences it. In a wonderful twist of fate, we learned that Robert Dickerson himself was a Darlinghurst Public School alumnus.

In return, the children presented Jennifer with a wonderful Darlo Public original artwork as a keepsake. The children also made Christmas decorations to adorn the Sacred Heart Christmas tree.

This project is a beautiful reminder of how creativity and community can come together to make a real difference. Thank you to Darlinghurst Primary’s talented young artists for bringing joy to our patients and staff.
