Nursing Excellence
Since 1857, nursing excellence has been at the heart of care at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.
- Over 2,300 registered nurses work across St Vincent’s Hospitals in NSW, representing more than 40% of our workforce.
- Nurses care for more than 69,000 patients each year across Emergency, ICU, Theatres, Cancer Care, Palliative Care, Mental Health and Heart and Lung services.
- St Vincent’s Nursing Research Institute has published 310 peer-reviewed studies since 2009.
Guided by compassion, excellence, justice and integrity, our nurses advocate for equitable access to care and help transform health systems through evidence-based, ethical and people-centred practice. They provide person-centred care across every setting from acute and intensive care to correctional health, community outreach, mental health and palliative care leading, educating and innovating so every patient is treated with dignity and hope.
As medicine and technology evolve, so does our approach to care. Our Nursing Excellence program equips senior nurses with the skills and confidence to thrive, while helping our hospitals attract and retain the best nursing talent.
Together, we are creating transformative initiatives to attract and retain exceptional nurses through: Leadership, Research, Education, Professional Development and Workforce Wellbeing.
This work strengthens patient safety and drives continuous improvement through education, leadership and clinical research across all areas of nursing including Indigenous cadetships, nurse education program, nursing research fellowships and nursing research PhD programs. Secure funding allows our clinical researchers to develop better models of care and improve treatments to support patients and families facing complex illnesses.
