A message from our CEO

This year is a particularly special one as we mark several important anniversaries across St Vincent’s Hospitals, including the 40th anniversary of St Vincent’s Curran Foundation in October 2024. We are excited to celebrate 40 years of Heart Lung innovation, which began with the first successful heart transplant in 1984.

We are now entering the next phase of the re-development of the St Vincent’s Heart Lung Clinic and Interventional Cardiology Suites. This will ensure our hospitals are equipped to continue driving world leading treatments into the future. We are delighted to announce a transformational gift from the Sutton Family in support of the Hospital’s new Interventional Cardiology Unit. Having already generously supported the project with a $3 million philanthropic gift, we are honoured and grateful that the Family will extend their support with a further $2 million in memory of the late Laurie Sutton AM, a wonderful philanthropist and Visionary friend of the Hospital. The unit will be named to reflect this legacy as “The Laurie Sutton AM and Sutton Family Interventional Cardiology Unit”.

I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the sad passing of Mr Lang Walker AO. He leaves an incredible legacy in philanthropy, helping support Australia’s first Total Artificial Heart program at St Vincent’s. This established the early foundations for the work being led by Professor Chris Hayward and his team on the new fully implantable artificial heart. The philanthropy of our donors has played a crucial role in establishing St Vincent’s Heart Lung Centre of Excellence.

We are also grateful to Nick Politis AM for his transformational gift that has established the Nick Politis and Family Cancer Care and Research Initiative, The Harker Family for their support of the Lung Transplant Research program and the Liveris family who are helping drive our new Discovery & Innovation Fund with their visionary founding gift.

This year represents an opportunity for us to reflect on incredible achievements enabled through the leadership of St Vincent’s and our clinicians with your support and look forward to how we can continue making a life changing difference together.

We are deeply grateful for all your support and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events as we celebrate these anniversaries throughout the year.
