Heart Lung Clinic upgrade and ICU expansion

For more than 50 years, St Vincent’s has led breakthroughs that have changed how modern medicine is delivered in Australia, particularly in cardiothoracic care. In 2019, we celebrated 35 years of the Heart and Lung Transplant Program and in 2024, we will celebrate 40 years. Our vision is to formally establish the St Vincent’s Heart Lung Centre of Excellence, to be made possible by securing philanthropic support over the next 10 years to supplement Government funding and research grants. Our current fundraising priority is to secure support for the expansion of the Heart Lung Clinic and new ICU Care Pods.

This priority was made more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, which demonstrated the need for more rooms to consult and treat our heart and lung transplant patients and other highly vulnerable patients with minimum exposure to others. The fundraising campaign for the expansion of the Heart Lung Clinic and the ICU upgrade began earlier this year and through the generosity of our supporters, $3.8 million has been raised by the end of June 2022.

This expansion of the Heart Lung Clinic and addition of six new single ICU pods is a key step in strengthening our “clinical core” across the Public and Private Hospitals, as we prepare for the establishment of the St Vincent’s Heart Lung Centre of Excellence. Progression towards the Heart Lung Centre of Excellence is a strategic goal of St Vincent’s Hospitals and we express our sincere gratitude to all our supporters of this very important campaign. We would also like to thank The Hon Dennis Mahoney AO QC, Ferdi Dominelli OAM and family, the Ubeja family, Ginia Rinehart Robinson, Sally White OAM, JW & M Cunningham, the Howarth Foundation, Michael Lynch and Dr Peter Brennan AM.

We look forward to sharing more of this campaign in the coming months but if you would like further information on this project, please contact Susan Williams at the Foundation susan.williams2@svha.org.au .
